Jake Evans, the Trump-endorsed candidate in the Republican primary in the race for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District seat, spoke with The Georgia Star News about his support for law enforcement.
The Star News asked Evans if he had family connections with law enforcement and how they fared during the 2020 riots in the Atlanta area.
“My uncle was a deputy sheriff for over 30 years and my cousin is a current police officer, so this is an issue that is very near and dear to me,” he said.
“I remember my cousin telling me the story that when all of this was going on, he was driving down the road and someone pulled away. After he turned his siren on he had to make a decision,” the candidate continued. “The decision was does he chase after this person and potentially lose his job – potentially get accused of something he didn’t do – or did he just let him go?”
Evans talked about how supporting law enforcement is personal to him.
“That is something that hit emotionally home to me. We’ve got to provide our law enforcement the support that they need. There are police forces throughout our state, especially in these liberal counties, that can’t find people,” Evans said. “They’re paying more than they’ve ever paid and they still can’t find people because it is a hard job. It’s a thankless job and we’re not giving the support and respect they need.”
Evans additionally spoke about how he believes that people need to be bold about their support for the police.
“We’ve got to be proud and unapologetic in supporting our law enforcement because they keep our communities safe. They put their lives on the line,” he said. “They put their careers on the line by getting accused of all this baseless rhetoric.”
“Its a big, big issue, particularly here in Atlanta with the former mayor. She folded about as hard as anybody folded and she would not have gotten re-elected if she ran again, so she decided not to run again. That shows you how big of an issue it is, even for the folks of Atlanta, which is a left-leaning place,” he concluded.
The Republican primaries in Georgia are scheduled to occur on May 24. In addition to Former President Donald Trump’s endorsement, Evans has received the backing of former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich.
